Debbie Jiang

Community Historian

Debbie Jiang is an educator, writer, community historian and advocate for Chinese and Japanese Canadian history. She is a hockey enthusiast (Go Habs Go!). She says, "I think nowadays, I like First World War history more than hockey, if that were possible! (I do like First World War hockey history, too!)" Born in Montreal and raised in Ottawa and Vancouver, Debbie finds great job in matching Japanese Canadians with their grandfather's confiscated fishing boats.

She was interested in finding out more about Larry Kwong and began researching Chinese Canadian hockey players. The end result was a 6-page feature "From Head Tax to Hockey Heroes" about the Chin brothers and Paul Henderson from Lucknow, Ontario that was published in Canada's History magazine in the Dec/Jan 2025 issue. Read it here: https://www.canadashistory.ca/explore/settlement-immigration/from-head-tax-to-hockey-heroes.

Overall, Debbie likes to research and write about Canadian history you never knew but wish you did.
